Five people from County Durham have been fined for littering offences - and forced to pay more than £2,000 collectively in costs to the court. 

The five people, who appeared at Peterlee Magistrates Court, were punished after Durham County Council brought the prosecutions to the court. 

Each of the five people was fined after ignoring notices about waste in their gardens from Durham County Council and failing to pay a fixed penalty notice in time.

Here are the five County Durham residents who have been fined for littering offences:

  • Dawn Carter, of Ridley Avenue, Chester-le-Street has been prosecuted for failing to comply with a Community Protection Notice in relation to waste in their garden/yard. They now have a total of £558 in fines and costs to pay.
  • Carl Davison, of Ridley Street, Stanley has been prosecuted for failing to comply with a Community Protection Notice in relation to waste in their garden/yard. They now have a total of £558 in fines and costs to pay.
  • Kirsty Louise Jenner, of Nightingale Place, Stanley has been prosecuted for failing to comply with a Community Protection Notice in relation to waste in their garden/yard. They now have a total of £760 in fines and costs to pay.
  • George Williams John, of Spen Street, Stanley has been prosecuted for failing to comply with a Community Protection Notice in relation to waste in their garden/yard. They now have a total of £638 in fines and costs to pay.
  • Sarah Nicholson, of Parameter Street, South Moor has been prosecuted for failing to comply with a Community Protection Notice in relation to waste in their garden/yard. They now have a total of £601 in fines and costs to pay.
